Eyes are the most important facial feature and are the first areas to show the signs of aging. Furthermore unhealthy lifestyle, improper sleep and certain environmental factors also make eyes look tired and aged. Blepharoplasty – commonly known as eyelid surgery – is the surgical procedure performed to get rid of visible signs of aging on eyelids including puffiness, sagging skin and lines and wrinkles. Eyelid surgery can be tailored according to the requirements and desires of patient and it has various types. Here you will come to know what you can expect from eyelid surgery.

What to expect before eyelid surgery
You will have a consultation with plastic surgeon before eyelid surgery. During consultation, you will discuss all your expectations and concerns with plastic surgeon and he will guide you about the types of procedure and what you can expect from it. He will perform physical examination to assure your candidacy for surgery. He will also provide you with pre-surgical instructions, which will help you go through the surgery smoothly without any risks and complications.
What to expect during surgery
Eyelid surgery is done on outpatient basis. It may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia depending on the condition of patient. The duration of surgery varies depending on the type and technique used for surgery. The procedure involves making incisions, making required alterations and finally closing the incisions. Alterations include removal of excess fat, repositioning of tissues and removal of excessive sagging skin. Types of eyelid surgery are:
  • Upper eyelid surgery: It is performed on upper eyelids to improve the appearance of droopiness, sagginess and fine lines and wrinkles. In this procedure, incisions are made in the natural creases of upper eyelids.
  • Lower eyelid surgery: Lower eyelid surgery is performed on lower eyelid surgery and it aims at improving the appearance of lower eyelids by removing sagginess, fine lines and eye bags. It can be performed by making incision either just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. The procedure in which incision is made inside the eyelid is called transconjunctival approach and is mostly performed on younger women who don’t have excess sagging skin. It doesn’t involve removal of excess skin. It only repositions or removes the fat deposits in the lower eyelids and removes eye bags.
Both upper and lower eyelid surgeries can also be performed at the same time.
What to expect after eyelid surgery
You will be sent to recovery room immediately after eyelid surgery, where you will be monitored for complications. You will be sent to your home on the same day of surgery. Plastic surgeon will give you certain instructions that will help minimize side effects and make your recovery smooth and comfortable. Pain and discomfort is usually minimal that can be managed easily by taking pain medications. Some common side effects of surgery include swelling, bruising, itching and tenderness, which take several days to resolve completely. Sutures are mostly removed within 7 to 10 days after surgery. Most of the patients heal within two weeks and enjoy the outcomes of surgery.
